Traditional travel demand models do not incorporate activity participation, although it has long been recognized that urban travel is a demand derived through the need and desire for activity participation. The activity-based approach to travel demand analysis and modeling, which has been developed over the past 20 years, has as its foundation the influence of activity participation on travel behavior. This approach is receiving increased attention in an era when transportation planning and policy analysis issues demand better tools. Yet, only a few models currently exist capture the joint relationships among socio-demographic characteristics, activity participation and travel behavior. Figure 1 shows an overview of the model developed and estimated in this research.
