Themes in Mark's Gospel

Like all writers, Mark must have had particular points he wanted to get across to his readers, but he did not stated them
explicitly. By careful reading of his gospel, New Testament scholars have pointed to a number of themes that run thorough it.
These could be the points Mark want to make, and might be among the reasons he wrote his gospel.

The identity of jesus
Nowhere is Jesus's humanity more clearly presented than in Mark's Gospel. Mark shows us that Jesus was on occasion angry, or afraid of death; that he needed the support of his disciples; and that he thought God had deserted him. Yet Mark also gives the impression of Jesus' great authority. in his teaching and healing; in controlling the force of nature; and ultimately in overcoming death. Many Christians think that Mark's presentation of Jesus was intended to support Christians in Rome at a time of crisis. When they were afraid, or angry, they should feel that Jesus understood. Yet his authority and the triumph of his resurrection would have arrsuered them that they could trust in him.

Many different titles are used for Jesus, and they also point to his iedenty. Central to his gospel is the theme of the "Messianic Secret"; Jesus did not want his true identy known.
